Assuming you don’t live in an area with strict HOA regulations, there are lots of fun things you can do to give your mailbox a little more razzmatazz. Here we’ve collected some ideas and tips for fun and quirky things you can do to your mailbox.
Here are 9 tips to help you get the coolest mailbox on the block!
1. Have a metal person holding it up
Create a man or woman out of metal who can hold the letterbox up at the correct regulated height. You could use metal wire or strong steel poles to support the weight of your letterbox. It all depends on what style you prefer.
You can paint your metal person fun colors and give them a lighthearted expression that is sure to cheer up passers by. We’ve seen metal people holding up mailboxes while smiling and waving to the street nearby!
2. Make it into the Death Star – Cool Mailbox Ideas
If you’re a fan of Star Wars, there are a bunch of different Star Wars-themed mailboxes that might be worth trying to recreate. We’ve seen mailboxes shaped like the Death Star, R2-D2, the Millennium Falcon, and much more.
Heck, if you’re a Star Trek fan, you could even have a go at the Starship Enterprise.
If you’re a fan of any pop culture movie or TV show with recognizable props. It might be fun to create a mailbox themed like one of them!
3. Turn it into an animal – Cool Mailbox Ideas
If you use the mailbox as the main body, then it’s pretty easy to turn your mailbox into an animal. Simply paint it the right color and then add on some legs, a head, and a tail as necessary to turn your mailbox into something fun.
Animal mailboxes we’ve seen include pigs, horses, cats, dogs, fish, and much more. It’s a fun little arts and crafts project to try if you’re a fan of animals and art.
4. Make it into a little barn or dollhouse
Another charming DIY mailbox you often see is handcrafted dollhouses and little rustic-looking barns whose doors open and act as a mailslot.
These charming little creations look very cute and whimsical, giving your home some cute curb appeal and making the day of anyone who walks past.
The only downside is you need to make it very obvious where the mail is supposed to be posted. If it’s not obvious that you need to open the dollhouse front door to access the mail slot. Perhaps, leave a little sign that tells the delivery person what to do.
You want a cute mailbox, but you still want your mail to arrive!

5. Paint it with art or graffiti – Cool Mailbox Ideas
Why not keep your mailbox the exact same shape but simply paint it fun and exciting colors? If you’re into graffiti, murals, or you just like painting, you could simply paint your mailbox with graffiti or street art that makes it shine.
Obviously you want to make any paint look like it was intentional and not the subject of vandalism, so just make sure you choose an art style that looks deliberate and intentional.
6. Try something funny
You can try a wide range of mailboxes that are funny, witty, or amusing in some way. Obviously you need to make sure that the mailbox still complies with regulations and doesn’t offend anyone, but there are plenty of funny mailboxes that are innocent enough to get a snigger as people walk past.
Some of my favorites include mailboxes where the mail slot is put into the bottom of a person who is bending over, for instance.
I’ve also seen cool mailboxes where famous characters (like Donkey from the Shrek movies) are looking surprised by the letter that just been put in their bottom.
Everyone’s sense of humor is different, but there are so many funny jokes you can make with your mailbox alone.
Have you ever seen a mailbox shaped like an outhouse? It changes you.
7. Go retro with it
Something that seems to come up frequently with cool mailboxes is references to old, outdated technology.
Some people even go as far to incorporate the outdated technology into their mailbox design. It’s a great way to reuse old appliances without taking up precious landfill space.
For example, you often see mailboxes shaped like old gameboys, PCs, and fax machines. People love a bit of retro nostalgia.
8. Make them look like trees
There are lots of people who wrap their mailbox post with bark (or artificial bark). They also paint their mailbox green to make it look vaguely like a tree.
While this is a neat little trick, it’s a bit of a tricky one. On the one hand, it’s cool if your tree mailbox looks very convincing to passers by. On the other hand, you don’t want the postal worker on a tight schedule to not notice your mailbox because it looks like part of the foliage. Don’t make it TOO tree-like.
9. Adorn it with stones, tiles, or mosaics – Cool Mailbox Ideas
Some of the most interesting mailboxes I’ve ever seen have been adorned with unusual materials. It give them a crafty, artsy look.
For example, I’ve seen mailboxes adorned with decorative stones, tiles, or mosaics. Giving them a unique colorful appearance while also displaying a unique pronounced texture that looks really cool.
Obviously, just make sure that your stones or tiles are glued on very strongly. You don’t want to wake up after a storm to find that your mailbox is naked!
